SPOTIFY DAILY #43 – Röyksopp – “This Must Be It” - May 31st, 2012

I know they have been around for a long time but I just started listening.  This song is blazing hot…the beat and melodies are relentless.

It’s that time again…the months keep flying by.  I’m excited to release “Rocketship” to the world.  I feel the creative momentum building and although I always think the newest songs are great, this one is my favorite thus far.

I was challenged once again by Christian Hand in the studio.  This time I had already written three verses to this beat.  Christian heard them, thought they were good but told me to dig deep and write about something that had a major impact on me growing up.

I have had a very fortunate life with a wonderful family and great friends.  There is, however, a period of my life that was exceptionally difficult.

While attending Cary High School in North Carolina, I, along with all of the other students, had to cope with 6 fellow students and friends taking their own lives…3 in the same month.

To say this was a trying time is a colossal understatement.  I was close friends with two of the kids and knew them all.  There is honestly no way to prepare for tragedy of this magnitude especially at such a young age.

As the years went by, I dealt with everything the best I could…remembering the good times that I had with them and cherishing the moments with those close to me and still living.

I kept a rose from the casket of my friend and to this day it sits perfectly in tact atop my studio desk.

“Rocketship” is by far the most emotional song I have ever written.  It comes from a place of deep pain, a yearning for understanding and a hope that my friends moved on to a better place.

“Forever 17 in our hearts and minds.”

sigur ros

SPOTIFY DAILY #42 – Sigur Rós – “Rembihnútur” - May 30th, 2012

The new Sigur Rós album came out yesterday…their music is pretty much unclassifiable.  Haunting, uplifting, dark, huge, beautiful, sad, triumphant…oh, and the drums always sound amazing.

pantera

SPOTIFY DAILY #41 – Pantera – “By Demons Be Driven” - May 29th, 2012

“Beckon the call, Beckon the call”…I don’t worship Satan but I do love some Pantera.  I used to work out to this album back in the day and rekindled that aggression today in the gym.

ween

SPOTIFY DAILY #40 – Ween – “Little Birdy” - May 28th, 2012

This is one of the saddest and weirdest songs I’ve ever heard.  I remember being introduced to Ween as guys that sniffed a bunch of paint thinner and made music.  ”Can the sun reach down on us and through the heavens we would sing?”

luda

SPOTIFY DAILY #39 – Ludacris – “Phat Rabbit” - May 27th, 2012

“I be that nigga named Luda.  AKA L.O.V.A, L.O.V.A, fuck that shit nigga what you wanna say one time?  South Side let’s ride.”

One of the wittiest and most creative rappers, not to mention a pretty strong actor, Luda changed the game with his funny videos and inventive flow.

john mayer

SPOTIFY DAILY #38 – John Mayer – “Born and Raised” - May 25th, 2012

I don’t claim to be a big John Mayer fan but I appreciate his immense talent.  His new album “Born and Raised” has a very laid back country/rock feel.  The title track is really pretty.  Have a great weekend…

gang starr

SPOTIFY DAILY #37 – Gang Starr – “Royalty (feat. K-Ci & Jo-Jo)” - May 24th, 2012

“And all the girls they want to spoil me.  My honey anoints me with oil G.  After work she greets me and treats me like royalty.”  Guru is one of the best MC’s of all time…classic track with one half of Jodeci.

dion

SPOTIFY DAILY #36 – Dion & The Belmonts – “Runaround Sue” - May 23rd, 2012

I just heard this song in the grocery store and it reminded me that it is probably my favorite oldie of all time.  Music was awesome back then!  ”Well I shoulda known it from the very start.  This girl would leave me with broken heart.”

kimbra

SPOTIFY DAILY #35 – Kimbra – “Good Intent” - May 22nd, 2012

Kimbra is widely know as the female voice on Gotye’s smash “Somebody That I Used To Know”.  I’m checking out her solo release as I type and it is cool.  Very original sound and nice production.  This is the track that stood out on the first listen.
