Journal - Grammys 2011

Two weeks ago marked a very eventful time in Los Angeles as the 2011 Grammys decended upon La La Land. I was fortunate to attend the Atlantic Records Bruno Mars party on Friday Feb. 11th at Bardot in Hollywood.  I have been to Bardot quite a few times as a dance club but had never seen a live show there.  It is a small venue with a capacity roughly around 300-350 so I knew that I was in for a very intimate performance.  I arrived early and was able to get in, what I found out later, was a ridiculously crowded event.  Apparently somehow there were over 900 people on a guest list for a venue that could only handle 300, leading to a line that extended a couple of blocks up Vine St., North of Hollywood Blvd.

When Bruno and his band got on stage they KILLED it.  I posted up early about 10 feet away and a little to the left.  They only played two original songs...the hits "Just The Way You Are" (Official video link) and "Grenade"  (Official video link) and a ton of great covers.  Dr. Dre, Led Zeppelin, a mash up of Nirvana and Michael Jackson, Boys II Men, Poison and White Stripes to name a few.  Guest performers included Keri Hilson (on "Grenade"), k'naan, Far East Movement (I had no idea that they are Asian...the name makes a lot of sense now) and Wynter Gordon.  It ended up being one of the best shows I have seen based on how tight the band was and the intimate setting.  Check out the video footage I shot of Bruno and Keri Hilson performing "Grenade" is actually not that bad...

As far as the Grammys go, I always enjoy watching it because of the performances.  I am not a big awards show fan...I would rather just read about the winners the next day but the Grammys are different.  The two standout performances were Mumford & Sons and Cee-Lo and the muppets.  Mumford & Sons is a band that I have discovered recently and have been moved by their music.  Take three and half minutes and watch this performance of their song "Timshel" on a side street in is truly beautiful.
